Leading non-life insurance firms by gross written premiums market share in Italy 2017

Based on premiums written in 2017, UnipolSai was the biggest Italian non-life insurer when comparing its market share against four other companies. In fact, the insurance company headquartered in Bologna held 18.8 percent market share in the non-life insurance segment, followed by Generali with 13.4 percent. In 2017, UnipolSai’s gross premiums written on the non-life segment on the Italian market amounted to almost seven billion euros, a decrease compared to the previous years.

Non-life insurance in Italy

Italy is the sixth largest market in Europe for the non-life insurance sector in terms of gross premiums written. In 2018, the total value of gross premiums written on the Italian market amounted to over 33 billion euros. In the non-life insurance sector, motor insurance is by far the dominant segment. Indeed, in 2020, motor insurance gross written premiums in Italy amounted to over 15.6 billion euros.

Leading insurance providers in Italy

Founded in Trieste in 1831, Assicurazioni Generali is now the largest insurance group Italy and among the largest in Europe. In 2018, when considering both life and non-life insurance combined, Generali reported over 65 billion euros worth of gross premiums. This figure was nearly four times higher than that reported by Poste Italiane, second in a list of the leading Italian insurance groups in terms of gross premiums.
