Large retailers jewelry & watch sales Canada 2019

Sales of jewelry and watches at large retailers reached around 60.62 million Canadian dollars in April 2019. Sales figures generally peak in December of each year, accounting for the holiday and gift giving season. For example, in 2018, sales peaked at 125.87 million Canadian dollars in December, over double the amount of sales for most months of that year.

Shopping occasions

Falling on February 14th every year, Valentine’s Day, also known as Saint Valentine’s Day, is a traditional time to purchase jewelry for a loved one. In a recent survey, some six percent of respondents stated that they were expecting to spend the most on jewelry as a Valentine’s Day gift. Getting engaged also traditionally calls for a jewelry purchase. The average one-year engagement in Canada costs over 12,000 Canadian dollars, an engagement ring contributes 4,858 dollars to this total.

The worldwide jewelry market

The global jewelry market, excluding watches, was valued at approximately 271 billion U.S. dollars in 2018 - this figure is forecast to increase to 645 billion dollars by 2035. The value of the global luxury watch market stood at around 46.35 billion U.S. dollars in 2018 and is projected to reach 53.2 billion by 2023.
