The total number of ATMs (automated teller machines) fluctuated drastically in Germany between 2000 to 2023. As of 2023, there were approximately 77.5 thousand cash machines operational in the country. Just the year before, there were 79 thousand ATMs in use in Germany. Cash payments are still of high importance in German retail, as they accounted for almost 40 percent of all retail payments in 2022.
