While nearly 15 percent of companies in Quebec’s retail sector were engaged in e-commerce activates, retailers reported the lowest share of total sales made online – 9.6 percent in 2014. At the same time the highest share of online sales was recorded in the services sector – nearly 27 percent. Further findings show that 14.3 percent of total sales in the manufacturing industry were made online and so were 13.3 percent in the wholesale sector.
May 2015 findings indicate that nearly all responding Quebec companies selling products or services online had some kind of a web presence. The majority of firms reported having a company website, 85 percent had a social network profile and a transactional website, and 62 percent had a dedicated mobile website. Apart from the product or service and full company information, those companies that had a website also indicated offering secure payment systems and privacy policy statements as leading functionalities on their web pages. Additionally, the greater part of those sites were available in at least two languages, including French, while 2.6 percent of companies selling online had websites in English only.
The vast majority of businesses selling online based their e-commerce operations on an own, ‘in-house’ software. Far behind were seven percent of companies that used Magento as their online store software, followed by 4.7 percent using Votresite.ca. For digital payment, 28.3 percent of Quebec enterprises used PayPal, followed by 17.4 percent who used Moneris or TD and according to 15.1 percent their leading online payment system was either Desjardins or Monetico.
