Number of Subway restaurants in the U.S. 2015-2022

Global quick service restaurant (QSR) Subway operated and franchised a total of 20,576 restaurants in the United States in 2022, down from 21,147 the previous year. Since 2015, the company saw a year-over-year decrease in the number of stores. Despite this declining trend, Subway was one of the most successful Sandwich chains in the U.S. in terms of sales in 2022.

What is Subway's competition?

Although Subway has experienced a decline in units in recent years, the sales of Subway restaurants in the U.S. increased in 2022. That year, the QSR chain generated around 10.37 billion U.S. dollars in sales, up from 9.4 billion U.S. dollars the previous year. Subway is still the leading sandwich chain in the U.S. with its systemwide sales being roughly double its closest competitor, Arby’s. Subway also had some of the highest sales in the U.S. QSR industry in 2022, ranking after QSR giants Starbucks and McDonald’s.

Subway received an American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) score of 75 out of a possible 100 points in 2022. Comparatively, competitor Arby’s scored 77 points in that year's ACSI ranking. In 2022, Subway also received a score of 75 on the ACSI.
