Quarterly import price index of tobacco products in Canada 2017-2023

The tobacco industry is always on the move; it is responsible for and engaged in the growth, preparation, shipment, and distribution of tobacco and tobacco-related products.

In Canada, the import price index has been constant, with sudden spikes every other year. In the last quarter of 2023, the price index reached 122.8, which is a notable decrease from the 331.4 price index recorded in the last quarter of 2022. With the awareness of health concerns and smoking restrictions in different nations, global tobacco production has also decreased in the past couple of decades, reaching almost six million metric tons in 2022.

Smoking in Canada

Canada is known for its government control laws that restrict smoking in public spaces, limit tobacco advertising, and raise the price of cigarettes, among other measures. Because of this, smoking in the North American country has decreased significantly over the past few years. From around six million smokers in 2003, it decreased to almost four million in 2022.

With fewer smokers, fewer tobacco products are sold, and cigarette sales are on a constant decline, especially during the months of January and February, in comparison to the rest of the year.

Cigarettes or E-cigarettes?

Despite the health hazards that come with consuming tobacco products, they are still present in Canadian society. Nowadays, new options are available on the market, including vaporizers, vape pens, and E-cigarettes, which are more popular among the younger generations. Nonetheless, traditional cigarettes are still a staple in smokers’ habits.
