In 2018, there were about 1.3 million tonnes of freight transported from the UK to Ireland, a dramatic increase compared to the previous year, before slowing down to around 1.15 million tonnes in 2019. Figures for travel between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland where the whole journey was confined to the island of Ireland were excluded.
Overall, UK registered road vehicles moved around four million tonnes of freight to EU15 countries.
