Total distance travelled by passenger rail in the UK 1960-2022
An overall increase in rail travel was observed between 1980 and 2028 in the United Kingdom. In 2019, railroad transportation travel amounted to 80 billion passenger kilometers in the United Kingdom. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the distance traveled by rail passengers in the UK amounted to 16 billion passenger kilometers, a decrease of around 80 percent compared to 2019 levels. However, in 2021, with the ease of pandemic restrictions and starting to recover from the effect of the pandemic, the number increased to 47 billion passenger kilometers, growing to 64 billion passenger kilometers in 2022.
