In 2015, 170.7 million users in the United States accessed digital video content on YouTube, with experts projecting this figure to close in on 190 million viewers in 2019. The number of U.S. mobile phone video viewers reached 107.1 million in 2015. Due to the increasing usage of mobile internet, it comes as no surprise that mobile media consumption is also growing. In 2015, in-app mobile internet consumption amounted to 185 minutes per day among U.S. users. Mobile photos and videos were also among the most popular mobile activities in the United States, only ranking behind text messaging and email.
In 2014, the average daily time spent with digital video content among adults in the United States was 63 minutes, with mobile video time accounting for almost 30 minutes. The most popular types of video content streamed to smartphones were user-generated short clips, as consumed by over half of online video streamers. Other popular types of smartphone video content include news and weather clips, music videos, how-to-videos and movie trailers. Live sports games were the least popular type of smartphone video content. During a survey, 71 percent of U.S. mobile video viewers stated they preferred ad-supported videos as a video content payment model.
