Main current account: average amount of overdraft in the UK 2015

This statistic displays the average amount of overdraft, taken by the account holders on their main personal bank account in the United Kingdom (UK) at any time in the 12 months prior to the first quarter of 2015. The overdraft occurs, when the money is withdrawn from the bank account, but the available balance goes below zero. Many personal current banking accounts specify the authorized limit of the overdraft, and either offer it free of charge, or specify an agreed interest rate on the amount. However, sometimes the overdraft can exceed agreed terms, in which case the additional fees can apply, as well as higher interest rates. These are at the discretion of the particular bank. Data for the first quarter of 2015 showed that more than one half (55 percent) of the respondents, who had been in overdraft within the 12 months prior, were overdrawn for less than 200 British pounds.
