The number of general practitioners in Sweden saw no significant changes in 2020 in comparison to the previous year 2019 and remained at around 6305 practitioners. Still, 2020 marked the second consecutive decline of the number of practitioners. A general practitioner, also known as a family doctor, assures the provision of continuous care. They treat common medical conditions and perform routine exams for individuals, families, and communities. In addition to treating minor or chronic illnesses, they play a key role in referring patients to specialists or hospitals for urgent or specialized treatment.
