The number of general practitioners in Iceland saw no significant changes in 2022 in comparison to the previous year 2021 and remained at around 213 practitioners. Nevertheless, the number of practitioners has been subject to fluctuation over the observed period. A general practitioner, also known as a family doctor, assures the provision of continuous care. They treat common medical conditions and perform routine exams for individuals, families, and communities. In addition to treating minor or chronic illnesses, they play a key role in referring patients to specialists or hospitals for urgent or specialized treatment.
