Average internet connection speed in France 2008-2017

 In France, the average internet connection speed has increased from 3,071 kbps at the beginning of 2011 to 10,757 kbps in early 2017. From 2013 onward, its growth appears to accelerate, despite a slight decline in the second and third quarters of 2016.

The increasing connecting speed is not the only internet feature which has progressed in the past years. Going on the Internet via various devices and network types appears to become a current habit too. In 2011, using the Internet through a computer and with a fixed internet connection or WiFi was the main internet usage in France, but in 2018, logging on to the Web using a mobile device had become almost as usual as using a computer. Furthermore, in 2017, most respondents of younger generations declared having at least two types of internet accesses at home. 

Mobile internet usage

In a study carried out in France in October 2018, the respondents aged 15 to 34 years old said to have spent an average of 84 minutes on the Internet using a mobile device, compared to about half an hour on a computer. More generally, data from 2019 indicates that writing on mobile messengers and watching videos were the most common mobile internet practices in France: more than 60 percent of respondents declared doing both these activities on their mobile phones.
