The volume of petroleum, also known as crude oil, imported to France from OPEC countries has been declining since 2018, when it amounted to almost 30 million metric tons. Petroleum imports dropped to 14 million metric tons in 2020, and have slowly increased since then. In 2023, they reached 24.5 million metric tons. The main importers of petroleum to France in 2023 were the African countries of Algeria, Nigeria, and Libya, which are OPEC's members.
