In 2023, the leading destination for pharmaceuticals from Germany was the United States, with an import value of over 26 billion euros. The Netherlands followed, importing pharmaceuticals from Germany valued at approximately 9.8 billion euros.
Rising amount of exports from Germany
Pharmaceutical exports from Germany amounted to around 113 billion euros in 2023. Pharma exports have generally climbed year-on-year since 2002, when the export value was approximately 18.8 billion euros. Meaning the export value of pharmaceuticals has increased more than six-fold in two decades. However, 2023 saw a decrease compared to the preceding year.
Strength of the German pharmaceutical market
The value of pharmaceuticals imported into Germany was approximately 74 billion euros in 2023. This results in Germany having a positive trade balance in pharmaceuticals, since its exports are worth significantly more than the value of imports. Furthermore, the German pharmaceutical market generated revenues of some 69 billion euros in 2023, which made it the leading pharmaceutical market in Europe.
