In 2018, an estimated 13.2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide were emitted as a result of oil and gas extraction in the United Kingdom. This compared to 1.3 million metric tons of methane and 100,000 metric tons of nitrous oxide released in the same year.
Upstream oil and gas companies are required to reduce flaring and venting, a major source of greenhouse gas emissions within the sector, as much as possible, which has resulted in the decrease in emissions seen during this time period.
