In 2020, people drank an average of 0.1 cups of instant coffee per capita per day in the United States. This is a decrease compared to previous years: in 2017, for example, instant coffee consumption was at its peak, reaching about a fifth of a cup a day per person.
U.S. coffee drinking habits
When it comes to total coffee consumption, Americans drank an average of almost 2 cups per capita per day in 2020. This amount had stayed relatively stable over the past decade, with the exception of 2016, when people in the United States consumed about 1.64 cups per day. The same survey found that people drank the most coffee during breakfast time in 2020, about 1.3 cups.
U.S. decaf consumption
About one quarter of a cup of decaffeinated coffee (or decaf) was consumed per capita in the United States in 2020. Between 2011 and 2020, decaf consumption was at its highest in 2017 with approximately 0.4 cups, and at its lowest in 2016 with roughly 0.2 cups per day per person.
