Coffee preparation among U.S. past day coffee drinkers 2020, by package format

Almost 40 percent of consumers in the United States purchased their coffee in a pre-packaged bag in 2020. Just under 30 percent of U.S. consumers opted for the metal or plastic can, and approximately 25 percent reported that their coffee came in pre-measured capsules or disks that year.

Coffee grinding methods

In 2020, about 75 percent of coffee drinkers in the United States bought already ground coffee for their past day consumption. Some 20 percent of consumers purchased whole bean coffee, which they ground at home, while about 10 percent bought whole bean coffee, which they ground in the store.

Coffee export volumes worldwide

In the 2019/20 period, roughly 132 million 60-kilogram bags of coffee were exported worldwide. Worldwide export volumes have increased by approximately 34 percent since the 2008/09 period. In January 2020, the leading coffee exporting countries in the world were Brazil, Vietnam, and Colombia, respectively. During that month, Brazil exported over three million 60-kilo sacks worth of coffee.
