Get in touch with us nowBetween 2007 and 2015, the quantity of duck and goose Foie Gras produced yearly in France remained around 19 thousand tons, with slight increases and decreases. However, the production dropped after 2015 and reached its lowest in 2017 at around 11.5 thousand tons.
In 2015, an avian flu epidemic (H5N1) hit France, while many ducks were affected, this strand of the virus was particularly dangerous to chicken. However, between 2016 and 2017, the H5N8 virus, another variation of the bird flu, spread across the country. This strand of the virus was deadly to ducks, and, as a result, millions were euthanized.
Since then, the volume produced had been increasing until 2020. In 2021, another outbreak happened and production has dropped and has yet to recover.
