Food industry number of enterprises in Spain 2022, by sector

The bakery and pasta industries were quite present in Spain according to latest studies, which show that approximately 11,600 companies involved in this sector were operational in Spain as of January 2022.

Baked goods consumption in Spain

The consumption of baked goods seems to be generally decreasing in Spain. Recent data show that there is a downward trend in bread consumption, particularly regular fresh bread, which registered a record low of around 958 million kilograms in 2021 compared to 1.6 billion in 2008. Additionally, the average Spaniard consumed over six kilograms of pastries and over five kilograms of cookies, ranking these two products the most consumed within the sweet baked goods group.

Baked goods expenditure in Spain

The average Spaniard spends over 50 euros on frozen/fresh bread. Figures also confirm that the per capita expenditure was very similar for regular fresh bread, albeit slightly under. On the sweet side, Spain spent the most on pastries and cakes. Expenditure on this type of products has been fluctuating greatly over the past few years, registering its lowest point in 2007 at 54.7 euros per person and peaking in 2016 at 64.4 euros per person.
