Meat industry number of enterprises in Spain 2008-2022

The number of companies involved in the meat industry in Spain experienced a considerable downtrend over the period under consideration, reducing its figures from over 4.4 thousand firms in 2008 down to 3.8 thousand in 2016. The number of companies in this industry picked up thereafter and reached 3.88 thousand by 2018. However, in 2022 the number of meat companies amounted to approximately 3.48 thousand, the lowest figures in the period studied.

The meat market in Spain

Fresh meat was most expensive at traditional specialized shops, where a kilogram of fresh meat cost 8.27 euros in 2022. In contrast, discounts supermarkets featured the cheapest prices at approximately 5.89 euros per kilogram of fresh meat. With nearly half of the population, supermarkets were the most popular distribution channel where Spaniards purchase their fresh meat.

Meat consumption in Spain

Spaniards consumed approximately 28 kilograms of fresh meat per capita in 2022. Chicken meat was the most consumed type of meat in Spain that year with 10.5 kilograms per capita, followed by pork meat at 8.6 kilograms per head. Spaniards however spent more money on processed meat than on any other type of fresh meat. The Mediterranean country spent over five billion euros on processed meat, followed by pork and chicken, that recorded values of over 2.3 billion euros each.
