Retail e-commerce sales value in Canada 2021-2027

Forecasts suggest, that in 2023, online retail sales in Canada amounted to nearly 110 billion Canadian dollars. Furthermore, by 2027, e-commerce retail sales in the North American country would be more than 151 billion Canadian dollars.

Canada’s online shopper specs

In 2021, Canada was home to over 27 million digital buyers, and the figure is expected to surpass 30 million by mid-decade. Among Canadians who shop online, the majority tend to make their online purchases on desktops rather than mobile devices, with desktop e-shopping generating an estimated 53 billion U.S. dollars in 2021. Additionally, chain retail generates a significant portion of Canada’s total e-commerce sales, making up a forecasted total of 47 billion U.S. dollars by the end of 2022. Even though most of these sales are first-party, third-party sellers are set to double sales in the next five years.

Amazon in Canada

With its massive global success, Amazon is unsurprisingly one of Canada’s biggest e-commerce players and is responsible for a significant portion of third-party e-commerce sales. On Amazon’s Canadian site, amazon.ca, the company is expected to complete 2022 with a sales value of almost 12 billion U.S. dollars, roughly one-tenth of the country’s forecasted retail e-commerce sales for the same year. Amazon also ranked as Canada’s leading e-commerce grocery site in 2021. The platform offered approximately 60,000 different packaged food products, boasting a much larger inventory than other Canadian-native grocery e-retailers.
