Annual volume of beer consumed in Spain 2008-2022

Spain consumed over 42 million hectoliters of beer in 2022, which translate into a personal intake of around 58 liters per capita. Spain may not reach yet the same level of beer consumption per person as the rest of its European counterparts, but its national consumption figures saw a considerable increase in the past nine years. Nonetheless, in 2020, beer consumption dropped to around 36.3 million hectoliters.

Beer VS. Wine: Spain’s case

The average Spaniard, however, spent more money on wine in 2020 compared to the other years, and has now decreased again. Despite that, wine consumption in the Mediterranean country stands at a significant lower level compared to other European countries.

Alcohol consumption in Spain comparatively low

Spaniards may like their beer and wine, but they still only appear in the middle positions of the list of alcohol consumption in Europe, led by Latvia, whose average pure alcohol intake stood at 12.2 liters.
Normally, the average beer will contain between four to five percent of pure alcohol content or ethanol, standard wines average at around 12 percent and distilled spirits at about 40 percent.
