Restaurant chains - additional information
Restaurant chains are a group of restaurants with the same theme and brand which operate in numerous locations. These differ from independent restaurant which are unique to one location. Worldwide, the majority of restaurant sales are made up by independent restaurants with only around 26 percent of sales being generated by chain restaurants. This trend can be seen in every region of the world, with the exclusion of the United States and Canada. These countries are the only region in which the sales of chain restaurants are higher than that of independents, with 52.9 percent of restaurant sales being generated by chain restaurants in 2014.
The four leading quick service restaurants in the world are U.S. brands. The largest of these is McDonald’s, which generated global revenues of 27.44 billion U.S. dollars in 2014. The United States was the largest geographic segment for McDonald’s in 2014, making more revenue than all other lead markets combined.
