In 2023, Germany was the leading inbound tourist market in Greece based on the number of arrivals. Overall, the number of arrivals by German travelers reached nearly 4.8 million that year. The United Kingdom followed closely in the ranking in 2023, with around 4.6 million tourist arrivals. 

How many inbound tourists visit Greece?

In 2023, the number of inbound tourists in Greece grew significantly compared to the previous year, totaling over 36 million and exceeding the figures reported in 2019, the year before the impact of COVID-19. With the rebound in international travelers, also the value of international travel receipts in Greece recovered from the impact of the health crisis, surpassing 20 billion euros in 2023.

The importance of travel and tourism for the Greek's economy

In 2022, travel and tourism represented more than 18 percent of Greece's gross domestic product (GDP). That was the second-highest share of travel and tourism's total contribution to GDP among EU countries. When considering the total contribution of travel and tourism to employment in Greece, those markets supported, directly and indirectly, around 800 thousand jobs that year.
