Retail sales of pianos in the U.S. 2005-2021

The retail sales value of pianos in the United States almost reached pre-pandemic levels in 2021. Overall, the retail value of pianos amounted to 402.93 million U.S. dollars in 2021, denoting an increase of more than 51 percent over the previous year.

Grand pianos vs. Digital pianos

The number of piano sales in the United States differed significantly according to the type of product. Between 2005 and 2021, the number of grand pianos sold in the U.S. declined sharply, passing from roughly 35 thousand to around eight thousand. In contrast, over the same period, the number of digital pianos sold in the U.S. increased from 144 thousand to approximately 234 thousand.

How have sales changed for other instruments?

Overall, the music products retail sales value in the U.S. increased from 7.2 billion U.S. dollars in 2020 to 8.9 billion U.S. dollars in 2021. However, not all musical instruments experienced a decline in sales. For instance, while the retail sales of drumsets in the U.S. slightly decreased by around five million U.S. dollars between 2019 and 2020, the retail value of guitars in the U.S. improved by almost 100 million U.S. dollars.
