Similar to other countries in the European Union, the Netherlands have experienced a decrease in the total number of ATMs (automated teller machines) from 2000 to 2020. As of the end of 2020, there were 2.4 thousand cash machines located in the country. Just the year before, this number was at five thousand. At points of sale, payments with debit cards gained the favor over cash payments in the Netherlands from 2015 onwards.
