The amount of payment cards issued in Ireland from 2009 to 2022 rose over time from approximately 5.44 million cards with a payment function issued in 2009 to 21 million cards in 2020. Although payment cards have gained popularity over time, almost a third of payments in Ireland are still done in cash in 2019.
