In that time, approximately 59 percent of surveyed account holders recognized the banks classified as large challengers. Smaller challengers enjoyed an average recognition score of seven percent.

"Smaller challengers have typically been incorporated in the past five years. Four of them are now listed banks. They include: Shawbrook, Aldermore, Handelsbanken, Metro, STB and Onesavings."
"Larger challengers are longer established. Two of them are new but have inherited large portfolios of loans and advances to customers. They include Virgin, First Direct, Williams and Glyn, Nationwide, Post Office, TSB and NAB."
"Large retailers have entered financial services market offering unsecured products etc. Some of them - longer established like Tesco and M&S - are expanding their offering. They also include Asda Money or Sainsbury's."
