With the average Spanish consuming more than nine kilograms of it, pork ranked second on the list of most-consumed fresh meats that year. Generally speaking, the per capita consumption of meat in Spain averaged out at 41.2 kilograms in 2023.
Fresh meat was the most-consumed type of meat in Spain, with an annual consumption volume that amounted to over 32 kilograms per capita, followed far behind by processed meat. Fresh meat is mainly purchased in supermarkets with this type of establishment holding roughly half the sales volume of fresh meat in 2022. Nonetheless, specialist shops were also one of the leading distribution channels to buy fresh meat in Spain that year, with a share of approximately 25.4 percent of all sales.
Spanish households spent over 6.4 billion euros on fresh meat in 2022, with fresh pork ranking as the type of fresh meat Spanish consumers spent most money on, while the annual household expenditure on processed meat stood at over 4.3 billion euros.
