Box office revenue in Sweden 2013-2023
In 2023, the box office gross in Sweden reached 1.55 billion Swedish kronor, up from around 1.4 million kronor a year earlier – a growth of 11.5 percent. Despite the annual increase, the 2023 figure remainded under the 1.92-billion-krona revenue recorded in 2019, before the pandemic.
Swedish cinema: production and advertising
Cinema advertising spending in Sweden sharply rose between 2021 and 2022. The latest post-pandemic ad spend amounted to more than half of the 2019 figure. Meanwhile, movie production caught up. The number of feature films made in Sweden added up to 75 in 2023, above the average of the 2010s.
Theatrical releases in Sweden
The number of movies premiering in Swedish theaters in 2023 amounted to 329, thus exceeding the figures recorded during the second half of the 2010s. Yet the number was significantly higher than in 2021. While Swedish productions accounted for less than one-fifth of the theatrical releases, nearly three out of four feature films launched in Sweden in 2021 came from other European countries or North America.
