Number of road deaths in Hungary 2006-2021

There was an overall decrease in the number of road deaths in Hungary between 2006 and 2021. The highest number of road fatalities in this timeframe occurred in 2006, totalling 1,303 fatalities. In 2021, Hungary recorded 544 road traffic fatalities, marking an increase compared to the previous year.

In 2020, the number of people non fatally injured in road traffic accidents reached 17.7 thousand, representing a decrease compared to the previous year. As of 2021, the number of road traffic accidents causing personal injury amounted to approximately 14 thousand.

Media coverage of causes of death

According to the findings of a survey conducted in 2019, transport injuries, such as road accidents, were the most frequent cause of death Hungarians saw on the news, followed by cancer and suicide. However, media coverage did not correspond to reality, as in 2019, motor vehicle accidents accounted only for 0.7 percent of deaths in Hungary.
