In total, the rail freight transport volume amounted to 131 billion million ton-kilometers in 2021. This increase was preceded by a declining rail freight transport volume. Rail freight transport refers to the transportation of cargo by train. The types of goods transported in freight cars vary but include bulk cargo, intermodal containers, and general or specialized freight. Rail freight transport can be national or cross between countries linked together by railway network.
