This statistic shows the total number of adult and child victims of violent assault in Canada in 2016, distinguished by type of offence. In 2016, there were 217,178 victims of violent assault in Canada. 20,630 children and youth victims aged 17 years or younger, experienced a common assault (including pushing, slapping, punching and face-to-face verbal threats).

Assault levels:
'Level 1 common assault' is the least serious form of assault and includes pushing, slapping, punching and face-to-face verbal threats.
'Level 2 major assault' is defined as assault with a weapon or causing bodily harm.
