Paris Charles de Gaulle: number of passengers per month 2014-2018
The Charles de Gaulle airport is the fourth most popular airport in Europe and the main entrance door in France
Charles de Gaulle’s flow of passengers estimated at 64 million in 2017, places it among Europe’s most popular airports, just behind the London Heathrow airport and the Airport of Frankfurt. This passengers flow arriving and departing from Paris could be in part explained by the position France occupies as one of the most visited countries in the world. As the main entrance gate to France, the Charles de Gaulle welcomes a great part of inbound foreign tourist arrivals in France: France welcomed over 86 millions of tourists in 2017, of which, around 68 million came from Europe and 8.7 million from the Americas . Among many other European nationalities, the British occupied the first position based on the number of arrivals in 2017: Over 12.7 million British nationals arrived in France in 2017 .
Tourism plays an important role in the French economy
As shown by the number of inbound arrivals in France and the traffic of passengers going through the gates of the Charles de Gaulle airport, the tourism industry plays an important role in the French economy. In 2017, this industry was directly responsible for the creation of over 1.19 million jobs in France and contributed with around 204 billion euros to the French Gross domestic product in the same year. Given its economic importance, the French government plans on implementing a number of different strategies that consist in promoting France abroad as a major tourist destination, as well as diversifying the tourism offer So far, the estimations made by the World Travel and Tourism show that these strategies adopted by the French government would result in a general increase of jobs created by this sector: Up to 3 million new jobs will be generated by this segment by the year 2028, meaning that we could also expect an increase of the number of passengers handled by the Charles de Gaulle airport.
