The frequency of such contraventions is varied, as demonstrated by the fact that the low of 56 contraventions was recorded in 2012, and the high of 112 contraventions was recorded in the following year.

The European Commission's obligations under Article 17(1) of the Treaty on European Union make the Commission responsible for monitoring compliance with more than 200 pieces of environmental legislation in 27 Member States. Where the European Commission suspects a breach of environmental legislation by an EU Member State, the Commission has the authority to commence legal proceedings in the European Court of Justice.
