The television provider in Canada with the highest number of subscribers in 2017 was Bell Canada with over 2.7 million, followed by Shaw with just over 2.5 million subscribers. Whilst these figures are impressive at first glance, and indeed by any standards, subscriber numbers have fluctuated heavily since 2010 when Shaw’s subscribers amounted to over 3.2 million. Meanwhile Rogers, Cogeco and Videotron have also seen their subscriber numbers fall in recent years, and Telus was the only provider to see consistent growth in the same time period.
TV in Canada
According to a study in late 2018, the majority of surveyed Canadian adults said that they currently subscribed to cable and satellite TV services, though 32 percent of those aged 18 to 34 years old said that they used to subscribe but no longer did so. Money is often a factor for consumers when they choose to leave their providers. Not getting good value for money has been cited as the main reason for cancelling TV subscriptions, and others said that they had cut the cord because they could no longer afford their current service.
In terms of time spent with television, the most recently available data shows that younger generations watched less TV per week than older viewers. Whilst teenagers aged between 12 and 17 years old were reported to watch around 15 hours of television per week, 50 to 64-year-olds watched more than double this amount and those aged 65 or over were said to have spent over 42 hours watching TV on a weekly basis.
