In 2022, the main purpose for domestic overnight trips in Great Britain was visiting friends and relatives, accounting for 44.7 million trips. Meanwhile, domestic overnight holiday trips totaled 43 million. While visits to friends and relatives in 2022 surpassed pre-pandemic figures, domestic holidays were down from 2018 and 2019 levels, when the figure stood at roughly 60 million. Overall, the number of domestic overnight trips in Great Britain totaled 125.7 million in 2022, which was the highest it had been since 2012.

¹ Due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, 2020 data is missing, and 2021 figures only refer to the period from April to December. In 2021, the source changed the survey method from face-to-face interviews to online surveys. It then mentioned that these reasons limit the comparability of 2021 data with figures published up to 2019.
² The survey, carried out weekly, asks respondents about overnight trips taken in Great Britain during the previous four weeks. While the annual target sample is 60,000, the number of respondents from April to December 2021 was 47,008. However, the sample size used for trip estimation was lower than the number of interviews, as not every respondent had made an eligible overnight trip.
