VKontakte: number of monthly active mobile users 2016-2023

VKontakte, also known as vk.com, has recently enjoyed a sustained period of growth. From December 2016 to December 2022, the company gained nearly 27.7 million active mobile users, amounting to 84.7 million mobile active users in the latest period observed. 

VKontakte: young, metropolitan users

Known as the Russian version of Facebook, VKontakte’s users base consists mostly of millennials, with over two thirds of users under the age of 34. When broken down by regions, Saint Petersburg was leading, with half of the population actively using the platform. Roughly 20 percent of the total population was actively using Vkontakte countrywide in 2019.

Yandex: the other Russian internet giant

VKontakte forms a major part of the Russian internet landscape, along with search giant Yandex. Yandex’s primary point of contact with customers is their search-engine. Like Google, Yandex’s services go well beyond search. Based in the Netherlands and with offices around the world, Yandex offers services primarily to the Russian language market covering ecommerce, navigation, advertising, mobile development as well as a taxi/ride-sharing service and a car sharing service. Advertising is the company’s primary source of revenue. In 2021 the company had an annual net income of 14.6 billion Russian rubles, with earnings before income taxes amounting to 7.22 billion Russian rubles.
