A survey conducted by the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) in 2023 found out that 42 percent of respondents reported at least occasionally boiling the kettle with more water than they needed, an increase compared to the figures reported in 2013.
Share of respondents who boil the kettle with more water than they are going to use in the United Kingdom (UK) from 2013 to 2023
Question originally posed as ''How often, if at all, do you personally do any of the following?'' Percentages may not total 100 percent due to rounding. Survey base varied across the years.
Survey methodology up 2019 was a Kantar face-to-face omnibus survey. In March 2021, a temporary Kantar online panel type of survey was introduced, which was not based on a random sample of respondents. From autumn 2021 onward, the survey primarily used an Address Based Online Surveying (ABOS) method. Due to a change in survey methodology, the source states that direct comparisons between time series is not possible.
In February 2023, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) was created, focusing on the energy and net-zero portfolio from the former Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS)
