The total assets of financial institutions in the United States increased significantly between 2002 and 2022, despite a decline in the value of assets of every major financial institution type in 2022. In 2022, the assets of banks in the U.S. amounted to approximately 30.35 trillion U.S. dollars, down from 30.4 trillion U.S. dollars a year earlier. Central bank assets decreased as well, just as pension fund and insurance company assets.

Banks refer to the broader category of deposit-taking corporations. The OFI series contains a break in 2008 due to different starting points for data collection of some OFI-subsectors.
