Installed wind power capacity in France amounted to 22.2 gigawatts in 2023, this was the peak from the period in consideration. A recent scenarios projected by WindEurope estimated France to become the second biggest country in terms of installed wind energy capacity by 2030 in Europe.

Onshore and offshore wind power in France

Wind power installations can be installed both onshore and offshore. The French onshore wind energy capacity has been estimated at 20.6 gigawatts in 2022, meaning that the vast majority of the country's wind installations are onshore.  

Renewable energy opportunities in France

Despite its vast Atlantic coastline, France still has a low wind power capacity, as opposed to countries like the United Kingdom or Ireland where the world’s biggest offshore windfarm was inaugurated in 2018. Despite this, the wind energy sector employed almost 1.4 million people in France, which could increase with the development of offshore wind farms as a contribution to the extension of renewable energies.
