The total assets of financial institutions in Canada increased overall between 2002 and 2022, but the asset distribution between different types of financial institutions varied notably. The total assets in the banking sector exceeded five trillion U.S. dollars at the end of 2022, which was a notable increase compared to the previous year. On the other hand, the value of total assets in pension funds, insurance companies, and the central bank decreased when compared to 2021. Due to these drops, total assets in all financial institutions combined decreased slightly in 2022.
