Spain is, along with other Mediterranean countries, one of the world’s main producers of wine with a forecast production volume of 28.3 million hectoliters for 2023, a significant decrease compared to previous years.
Beer VS. Wine: Spain’s case
Despite Spain being one of the leading wine producers worldwide, the consumption of this alcoholic drink stands at a significant lower level compared to other countries. Spain’s wine intake ranked well behind other European wine-producing countries such as France or Italy, both at the top of the list, right behind the United States. Spain however finds itself lower on this list. Beer appears to be Spain’s favorite recreational drink, with its consumption volume figures amounting to 58 liters per person in 2022. What's more, the average Spaniard spent more money per capita on beer than wine.
Alcohol consumption: not a concern in Spain
Spaniards may like their beer and wine, but they still only appear lower on the list of alcohol consumption in Europe, led by Latvia, whose average pure alcohol intake stood at 12.2 liters in 2021. Normally, the average beer will contain between 4 to 5 percent of pure alcohol content or ethanol, standard wines around 12 percent and distilled spirits about 40 percent.
