Facebook users can communicate with friends and family, play games, share content via the network, along with many other activities. As of the first quarter of 2016, the “like” button was listed as the most popular Facebook features. About 80 percent of Facebook users worldwide stated using the “like” button in the last month. Other popular Facebook activities include watching a video, reading an article, messaging friends on a one-to-one basis and reading news stories.

Facebook Messenger was released in 2011 with the goal of taking over the instant messaging functionality from the main Facebook app. As of the third quarter of 2015, the most popular Facebook Messenger activity is sending a message, as 90 percent of users stated that they had sent a message via the messaging app in the last month.
