The Italian passenger car market suffered a downturn in 2020, before starting to rebound in 2021. As the novel coronavirus pandemic unfolded worldwide, the global automotive market was severely affected. Italy was among the hardest-hit countries as the first wave reached the European continent.

Italian passenger car sales in free fall

Italy's car market tanked amid the coronavirus outbreak in the country at the beginning of 2020. In April, Italy recorded only roughly 4,300 new car registrations, down from almost 175,000 units in April 2019. All-electric cars, on the other hand, have seen their market share increase significantly that year.

Leading car brands and models in 2020

The leading car models sold in Italy between January and December 2021 were the Fiat Panda, the Fiat 500, and the Lancia Ypsilon, with roughly 112,300, 44,800 and 43,700 units sold, respectively. Italy is the most important market for the Italian manufacturer Fiat, a subsidiary of Stellantis since 2021. Fiat sold over 223,600 cars in the country in 2021.
