This statistic shows the percent distribution of total expenditure by selected gold mining companies as of 2013, based on location of payments. During this year, 79 percent of total gold mining expenditures were dedicated to in-country-payments. That means the money stayed in the country where the gold was mined. The 2013 gold mining industry experienced a change as there was a great decline in gold prices and increased costs of input commodities such as diesel, which caused many gold operations to be unprofitable.

* This statistic is based on a survey including data from 15 companies with operations
in over 25 countries with a total of over 160,000 employees
and contractors. The operations reflected in this survey cover 732 metric tons, representing 24 percent. While this is considered a representative sample, it is only part
of the picture and the actual total global impact of gold mining
is much greater than shown in this report.
