SHARE NOW, which merged the formerly separate car2go and DriveNow, had three million customers in Germany as of last count. It was therefore the most popular car sharing service, followed by Flinkster and Miles. Flinkster is owned by Deutsche Bahn.

Car sharing has become widespread in Germany, driving mobility in urban areas in particular to a new level. It is also a practical solution for those who drive, but don’t wish to purchase or keep a car. In essence, car sharing means that a company rents out cars to a customer community for short-term commutes. Services are usually available through an app. Currently 855 German cities and towns have station-based car-sharing services.

The number of registered car sharing users in Germany keeps accelerating year after year, indicating positive trends for future developments. As of 2021, there were 2.87 million car sharing customers registered in Germany. Interest in the concept grew in recent years, decreasing in 2020, perhaps as a result of the restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
