Counterfeit euro banknotes out of circulation in Europe and the world 2014-2019

This statistic illustrates the main areas in which counterfeit euro banknotes were found and subsequently withdrawn from circulation from the second half of 2014 to the second half of 2019. It can be seen that the majority of counterfeit euro notes were found in Eurozone countries, ranging between 89 and 98 percent. As of the second half of 2019, 96.4 percent of counterfeit euro notes were withdrawn from circulation in euro area countries, with a further 3 percent being found in other EU member states outside the euro area.
During the second half of 2019 more than 300 thousand counterfeit euro banknotes were withdrawn from circulation, over 70 percent of which were denominations of 20 euros and 50 euros notes.
