This statistic is based on a survey and displays the percentage of U.S. adults aged 40 years of age and over that used prescription cholesterol-lowering medication between 2003 and 2012. In 2007-2008, 18.9 percent of these adults reported using statin alone. Elevated cholesterol levels is a major risk factor in the development of cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is one of the most common diseases in the country and the leading cause of mortality.
